Yuzu, scientifically known as Citrus junos, is a hybrid citrus fruit, also known as Yuzu, which belongs to the Rutaceae family. The factory was founded more than 1000 years ago in central China and today it is widespread in Japan, Korea and other parts of the world. Because of its popularity, it is cultivated commercially on a large scale here, especially in the prefecture of Koti on the island of Shikoku, where there are large yuzu forests. Besides Yuzu, it is also known as Japanese citrus fruit. We think Yuzu is a cross between Ichan Papad and the Mandarin Satsuma. The Korean kitchen is called Yuzu. The Japanese Yuzu and the Korean Yuzu are both borrowed from the Chinese Yuji, although this Chinese word now refers to Pumela.

Description of the installation

The fruit of the yuzu is an evergreen shrub of medium size or a small thorny tree that usually grows 2 to 7 meters high. A plant usually has many large spikes. The plant grows in sunny areas on rich, non nurturing, light and well-drained soil. It grows in halftone when you need it. The leaves are lanceolate with a rounded base, but with tips, usually pointed, that are slightly curved and anchored towards the tips. Knives from 5 to 7 cm long and 2.5 cm wide. Winged petioles are inverted seed buds, 18-30 mm long and 6-15 mm wide, with very or very small fields.  The leaves are usually large leaf-shaped petioles, similar to Kaffir lime and Papal Ychang, and are very aromatic.

Flowers and Fruit

The plant has small, white, lightly scented flowers in spring. The fertile flowers are followed by fruits that look like a small grapefruit with an uneven skin. The fruits are originally green and can be yellow or green depending on the degree of ripeness. Yuzu fruits are very fragrant and generally have a diameter of 5,5 to 7,5 cm, but can be up to 10 cm or more larger than a normal grapefruit. It has a relatively thick yellow skin and is more aromatic and much sweeter than other citrus fruits. The seeds are sticky, about 12-14 mm long and 7-8 mm wide.


Despite the fact that citrus fruits grow wild in Tibet and Korea, they are believed to have been introduced in the 10th century. In the 18th century they appeared in China and were brought to Japan for cultivation. Because of its popularity, it is cultivated commercially on a large scale here, especially in the prefecture of Koti on the island of Shikoku, where there are large yuzu forests.

Oddly enough, these other countries do not seem to produce Yuzu essential oils in very large commercial quantities, and despite numerous attempts they have been unable to find producers interested in exporting these oils. That’s a pity, because it would be interesting to compare oils from different origins.
