It is said that Mark Twain called the cherimoya the tastiest fruit known to man. He described the fruit itself as delicious.

That’s a lot of praise for a fruit that struggles with mangos, peaches, cherries and the like.

These expensive fruits are not widely available in American homes, but they are a feast for the eyes because of their unique taste and potential health benefits. Kerimoya looks like mugwort because they both belong to the Annonaceae family, but it’s built closer by.

So if you want to try something new and mix it into your fruit salad or your daily yoghurt parfait, try a sweet and mild chirmi.

What is a cherimoya?

The fruit of the cherimoya (Annona cherimola) is a sweet tropical fruit that comes from the valleys of southern Ecuador and northern Peru. Today, Spain is the world’s largest producer of cherimoya, also known as cream apple or anona, which is also grown in regions such as the Mediterranean.

It belongs to the same family as papaya and sweet apple. The term cherimoya tree literally means cold seed, and its fruits are traditionally used to treat a number of diseases.

The fruit looks like a green cone and is usually heart-shaped. If you cut the fruit, it has juicy white flesh and inedible black seeds.

The researchers found that different parts of the fruit have an interesting phytochemical profile, with high levels of polyphenols and alkaloids. Not only is the flesh consumed for its sweetness and beneficial properties, but the leaves are also a source of bioactive substances, so they are used in folk medicine and popular teas for the treatment of eye diseases, heart disease, skin problems and gastrointestinal tract.

1. Provides antioxidants

The Casta apple contains antioxidants such as flavonoids, carotenoids, vitamin C and cowry acid. Although the skin of the fruit consists of antioxidants, you should avoid eating it.

Fetal meat contains beneficial substances that can help combat oxidative stress, which is the cause of many health problems.

Studies show that flavonoids, for example, reduce cardiovascular mortality and help prevent cardiovascular disease. They also have anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic effects.

This applies to all the antioxidants we take in with food.

2. High fibre content

This fruit is a good source of soluble fiber, so it can help solve digestive problems and keep you going longer. Soluble fibres add volume to your stool, allowing it to move through your digestive tract.

Much research shows that fibre is an important part of a healthy diet. As a bonus, the fibre in the cherimoya tree is actually fermentable and contributes to positive changes in the microflora of the digestive tract.

Moreover, we know that fibre consumption helps to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, intestinal cancer, etc.

3. Combat ignition

The cherimoya tree contains various anti-inflammatory substances such as cowry acid. When rats were treated with bovine acid, the researchers found that it improved the symptoms of colitis, including mucosal damage and infiltration of inflammatory cells.

The neutralized apple also contains anti-inflammatory carotenoids and flavonoids that help improve general health and reduce the risk of chronic diseases.

4. Promotes a healthy immune system

Apple Vitamin C, a nutrient associated with the functioning of the immune system. The fruit of a single cherimoya tree contains about 60% of the daily vitamin C content, making it an excellent source of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory substances.

An adequate intake of vitamin C helps the body fight infections and many diseases. Studies show that vitamin C deficiency can lead to weakened immunity and increased susceptibility to infections.

5. Preserves the health of the eyes

Because the cherimoya tree contains a carotenoid called lutein, it can promote healthy eyes. Lutein has anti-inflammatory properties and is known to improve or even prevent age-related macular diseases, which are a major cause of blindness and visual impairment.

Lutein can also help reduce fatigue, glare and sensitivity to light. This strengthens the tissue of the eye and helps you to see more clearly.

6. Provides vitamin B6

Cherimoya is a good source of vitamin B6, which helps to maintain healthy blood vessels, support brain function, regulate sleep cycles and lower blood pressure.

Studies show that vitamin B6 deficiency can lead to memory and cognitive health problems. Maintaining a normal level of vitamin B6 is also important for your mood and your ability to concentrate.

7. Improves heart health

The cherimolier contains a number of compounds that promote heart health. These include antioxidants such as carotenoids, micronutrients such as potassium and magnesium, and fiber.

For example, studies show that potassium intake lowers blood pressure in people with high blood pressure and is associated with a 24% reduction in the risk of stroke.

Risks and side effects

Although there are several potential health benefits of sherrima, its fruits should not be consumed in large quantities. While the flesh is safe in normal quantities, the seeds and skin of the cherimoya tree contain higher levels of annonacin, a toxin found in some fruits of the Annona variety.

Some studies suggest that the consumption of annonacin may be associated with Parkinson’s disease. The poison seems to affect the central nervous system.

The pulp is safe, but to avoid dangerous exposure to annonacin, you should remove the seeds – and not eat the husk.

How to eat (Recipes)

Custard is often called apple because of its creamy texture and sweet taste. When perfectly ripe, it can be eaten with a spoon, like pudding.

You know the cherimoya is ripe when you squeeze it a little. If it’s not ripe yet, wait a few days before eating it. You don’t want the meat to be soft and juicy.

After opening the fruit with a knife, remove the seeds. The pulp is then removed or cut into pieces.

It can be eaten alone, as a treat or snack, or added to recipes using fruit.

  • Kerimoya is a heart-shaped fruit that looks like a pine cone but has creamy white flesh. It is a sweet, sweet fruit often called a vanilla apple.
  • The fruit is rich in nutrients, including a number of antioxidants (e.g. vitamin C), fibre and B vitamins. It has anti-inflammatory, psychotropic and cardioprotective effects.
